Used concrete from construction sites or demolished buildings historically has ended up in landfills. Today, however, it can be reused as crushed aggregate. This is not only a more environmentally friendly option, but it also can save the person who buys the recycled product a lot of money. There are several reasons to choose crushed concrete over traditional gravel for your next project.

Cost

Probably the biggest perk of using crushed concrete instead of manufactured gravel is the price difference. Gravel is usually made from crushed limestone. It can vary in cost depending on the source of the limestone and your location. The same factors are true for crushed concrete. The cost of gravel, however, is usually around $20-$40 per ton, whereas the price for crushed aggregate tends to be $6-$14 per ton. In this case, opting for recycled material can save you hundreds of dollars, depending on the size of the paving project.

Availability

Limestone doesn’t occur everywhere. If you are in an area without natural deposits, it must be shipped in. This can delay the paving schedule and make a significant difference in the price of your project. It may not even be available as an option. Discarded concrete can usually be found anywhere, though, so you are never at a loss for materials when you use crushed concrete.

Responsibility

The use of recycled materials is better for the environment. They don’t have to be mined and thus are less likely to disrupt fragile ecosystems.
