Processed stone, otherwise known as "Item #4 subbase" is often the main load-bearing layer of the pavement structure. The strength and durability of a driveway are not only determined by the type of concrete mix but also by base or subbase over which it's poured. A layer of gravel placed between the soil and the concrete or pavement prevents damage from shifting and heaving and increases the weight-bearing capacity of the driveway.
